A Fish with Feathers (Prairie Sushi Tortilla Rolls)

skipaheadLast weekend we had a couple of friends and their little ones over. The kiddos (Little K, Keagan, and Jordan) were such little angels the whole time; it was a small miracle. We didn’t have any breakdowns, blow outs, or brawls. Although Little K did put Keagan in a head lock momentarily. Keagan made use of his time to check out Little K’s kicks though, so I guess no harm no foul.

I decided that I’d keep things easy and just do a bunch of appetizers, that way we could just graze and chat and not have to worry about pulling something out of the oven or manning the grill. I made a ham and cheese ring, fruit pizza, and prairie sushi. You do know what prairie sushi is, right? Prairie sushi is made with the only kind of fish you can catch on the prairie. The kind that have wings, feathers, and beaks. Which I guess makes it a bird and not a fish. Small technicality.

Prairie Sushi Tortilla Rolls

Overall: four-star

Such an easy recipe to prepare and it was a crowd pleaser! I am going to keep this one in mind for larger family gatherings and serving picky eaters. The flavor isn’t going to rock your world, but it’s safe, easy, and affordable.  (Recipe here, from Pioneer Woman.)

Ease to Prepare: five-star

This couldn’t be easier. In fact, it was so simple that I’m contemplating making these for my weekday lunches. You basically make a cream cheese spread, swipe that across a few tortilla rolls, add in some deli meat and veggies  and you’re good to go! The toughest thing in this is rolling the tortilla tight enough so it holds together well for the “sushi” presentation. #notthattough

Instructions: five-star

As usual, PW has awesome photos and a great step by step walk through. You really don’t even need any of that for this recipe though, it’s a breeze. One little tip I’d give though is to just buy the matchstick carrots from the grocery store. You can certainly spend the time chopping carrots, but I’m willing to pay a teeny bit more to have them pre-chopped for me. They are a little harder to arrange in the tortillas since you need them all to be facing in somewhat the same direction, but just do your best.

Food: three-star

OK. I’ll ruin the suspense for you. This is a turkey wrap. That’s it. It’s a plain jane deli meat wrap prepared a little different and given a neat presentation so that it looks like sushi. I do like the cream cheese spread, but you could do lots more to take the flavor on this one out of the box a little. Sometimes though, you just want something familiar and easy – and that’s what this is. But if you’re so inclined, go ahead and add some sriraccha to the cream cheese, feel free to use some banana peppers, prepare some actual guacamole to toss in – do what sounds yummy to you!

Clean up: five-star

There isn’t any baking or major prep work, so there isn’t anything to clean up either! I think this is probably one of the very easiest clean ups I’ve ever had for a recipe. A few utensils, a cutting board, and a plate.

Cost: one dollar

You can’t beat the prices for this. Easy ingredients you’d buy for school lunches, turned classy with a fun presentation.

What is your vote? Keep this recipe as is – familiar and safe – or add in something to pep it up a little? If so, what would you add to it?
